20 years ago, when I first became a care manager there really wasn’t such a profession!
What was it like then? In many ways it was just like it is today. Daughters, sons, husbands, wives, friends and professionals who were trying to help an aging adult to grow with dignity and appropriate help. It was a challenge as there wasn’t really anyone doing it in organized manner. Resources were scattered. Many phones, research, time crunch, emotions run high and costly mistakes were made.

In just three years, my independent, fun-loving grandmother became completely reliant on me. What began as a minor health concern turned into a serious cancer diagnosis. Caring for her became my full-time job—coordinating doctors, managing prescriptions, arranging home care, and responding to frequent calls. The experience changed me. I discovered a better version of myself and a calling to support families with aging parents and loved ones.

In 2005, I worked alongside Dr. Kathy Johnson, CEO of Home Care Assistance, a small home care agency in Palo Alto, CA. She invited me to join her on home visits, where I met many older adults with complex conditions and diverse needs. Some had Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia; nearly all benefited from caregivers who improved their quality of life. There, I learned what it takes to provide compassionate, exceptional care for older adults.
